Processes and History
This selection of images is called “Processes and History” because one cannot separate the two. We are also those moments of striving to become what we have become. We are ourselves at moments of acceleration as we are what we are at moments of repose and wonder. Our “selves” are ever-changing. One moment we are on this path and the next we are on another. When all is said and done, it was the journey that mattered.
Among these images you will see Katherine Gianaclis as a mother, a woman, a wife, a Las Vegan, a worker, a wonderer. You will see her bookstore, Alpha Omega, which she dutifully worked for 23 years before she seriously took up her brushes again. You will see some brochures of her third husband, Bill Atterbury, who was The Sky King and who influenced greatly the last portion of her life. There are articles from newspapers dating as far back as the early 1940s. She was the young girl who won the poster contest at the Hollywood Bowl . She also won several art contests right here in Las Vegas in the 1960s.
There is a brochure highlighting some of her many murals in Las Vegas. And there are sketches. The visual ideas, some of which went on to become paintings. Most of all you will see the artist’s soul in these images. What Katherine Gianaclis was made of is apparent here. She was a person who valued life and never shied from it. She was a fighter and a provider and perhaps someone who knew that the work that she did while on earth mattered; that she mattered in the ultimate scheme of things.
